We have been hacked! The communications response to digital attacks

Thursday 26 November 2015
EACD Forum

Held at the end of each year, the Forum brings together communication professionals for an expert panel discussion as well as meetings of the EACD Working Groups. The 2015 EACD Forum will take place Thursday, November 26th at HSBC in London. The evening reception will take place from 19:00 to 20;30 and features a panel discussion on the topic of cyber security, data protection and privacy.

The digitisation of society and the economy affects every organisation. In order to stay competitive in our networked world, organisations need to keep up with digital developments and embrace innovation and change. However, this comprehensive digitization also makes corporations vulnerable and a target for digital attacks. Everything that is connected to the internet can be hacked. Recent high-profile data breaches at JP Morgan or Sony demonstrate that these attacks can happen to even the largest companies and illustrate the harm caused by the loss of customer data.

These and similar cases have the power to tarnish corporate reputation as well as pull the plug on customer trust – that’s why this subject needs urgent discussion in every board room. But what is the corporate communicators’ role in a cyber-security crisis? How well are we prepared to deal with the data theft? What can communicators do to keep their customers’ trust and maintain their stakeholders’ brand loyalty after a hacking? What are the tools to be used to be accountable and respond wisely after trust has been breached along with data? What preventative strategies can be employed by communicators? And how do we best inform employees about the importance of data security and explain just how easily computer systems can be exploited?

These and other urgent questions about communication after a digital attack and the importance of a fully-functioning cyber-security system for trust in companies will be discussed at our traditional panel discussion.
